P1010207It culminates with a pitch to a panel about their business offer and reflections upon the EPY experience. This, coupled with a business plan, a profit & loss account, a formal report, and feedback on the student's effort and engagement, allows the tutor to assess the year in academic terms.

We expect the students to adopt a business-like attitude to the year (by sending apologies for meetings, being punctual and acknowledging receipt of emails/information) and take them to task if necessary.

Type Undergraduate
Impacts

The EPY experience can either;

a) embolden a budding entrepreneur to formally develop their business after graduation or

b) avoid unsuitable ideas or inappropriate people pursuing the wrong course after graduation.

Either way, the knowledge and experience gained is valuable and we have anecdotal evidence that prospective employers are highly impressed that students have attempted to pursue their own business ideas as an undergraduate.

What worked well

EPY students have said.

"EPY made it massively clearer what I wanted to do. I was an illustrator; now I feel like a businessman who can do illustration."

"Selling my work to real customers gave me a lot more confidence about my ability

"EPY gave me the necessary confidence and knowledge to pursue my business idea."

What could be changed/improved

The level of support provided by the Enterprise team has become increasingly sophisticated with each intake as the EPY scheme has developed. For example, the introduction of a competitive application process has improved the quality of the participants.

We continually review the EPY scheme to develop and improve the content and will carry on doing this, based on our own ideas and the feedback from students and their academic tutors.
