Background and summary

Social entrepreneurs play an increasingly important role in addressing significant societal issues, yet research shows that launching and establishing a social venture is a challenge. Enterprise educators need not only to inspire and equip individuals to engage in social entrepreneurship, but also to support the learning and development of current social entrepreneurs.

This interactive event provided a platform for sharing best practice and placed an emphasis on learning from social entrepreneurs  as well as from academics and practitioners.

In the morning session presenters shared approaches, tips, hints and failures from cutting-edge social entrepreneurship learning and development programmes.

The afternoon session started with a panel discussion comprised of nascent, new and established social entrepreneurs who discussed their learning and development needs through the different stages of their entrepreneurial journeys. This was followed by a problem solving sessions using a “hold-up” methodology developed by MakeSense, a globally recognised social venture. This session engaged all participants in developing ideas to address the learning and development needs of social entrepreneurs and established opportunities for collaboration between delegates.
