Background and summary

The event focused on sharing best practice in embedding enterprise in non-business curriculum areas. It included an opportunity to share challenges, ideas and success stories and delegates gained top tips from colleagues who are already embedding enterprise.

The UK government is keen for students to develop their enterprise skills as recently highlighted by Lord Young in ‘Enterprise for All’ who said, “I would like to see students of all subjects, from Archaeology to Zoology, have access to elective enterprise modules, as part of or alongside their degree programme, for this is knowledge that will serve them well whatever they decide to do in life”.

Speakers from a range of universities presented the differing approaches that their institutions are taking to embedding enterprise into the curriculum. Delegates also heard from graduate entrepreneurs who shared their experience of learning to be entrepreneurial, demonstrating the impact that their time at university had on their enterprise ambitions and subsequent achievements.

Towards the end of the day we heard from a primary school teacher and a University of Cumbria academic about embedding enterprise in a PGCE course and how this is enabling enterprise to be embedded within the primary school experience.
