Description of the initiative

We hired a London Routemaster bus to take students on a unique entrepreneurial journey. We stopped at different companies, accelerators and innovative spaces around London including Facebook HQ, Geovation and MassChallenge. Students were given behind the scenes access and the opportunity to meet and learn from entrepreneurial experts. We wanted to make the most of the world-leading entrepreneurial ecosystem we have in London, introduce students to real-life entrepreneurship and have fun along the way.

Development and delivery

Hiring a routemaster was easier than we thought. The majority of companies we asked were happy for us to stop there and give the students a talk or short activity that would enhance their learning. The obstacles were the logistics of designing a route around London that took in all the companies at the times that worked for them and for us. And the capacity of people they could take. We also had expert speakers hopping on and off the bus to give talks which was great but also tricky logistically. We’ll learn from that next year and perhaps do a different route.

Impacts

The event really captured the imagination of our students and of King’s as a whole. It was completely unique and helped showcase the innovative, co-learning activities we run for the King’s community so it has impacted us, and helped support King’s new 2029 vision to be more connected to our London community. Surveys before and after the Venture Crawl showed that students took away lots of practical tips from people they met and were inspired and motivated to develop their ideas. They found the range of speakers useful – from early stage startups they could relate to, to global companies like Facebook and took away different learning from each.

Next steps?

Next year we are planning a fleet of buses! Taking more students to more stops and partnering with other organisations and universities.
