Lancaster University

At Lancaster we recognise that enterprise is about so much more than encouraging students to simply start new businesses. Our focus is on enriching the experience of all our students, helping them to develop enterprising capabilities and skills.

We coordinate and embed enterprise at Lancaster University through enterprising people, spaces and support:

Enterprising People - Enterprise is not limited to business skills; enterprise is for all. All students have the opportunity to develop an enterprising mindset, gain experience and develop enterprise and employability skills. We provide a mix of innovative and flexible learning programmes which are responsive to student and employer feedback. Our 'Insight into Enterprise and Employability' programmes are available to all students and benefit from significant support and contribution from private sector partners. For Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) each year the University organises an ambitious programme of inspirational events, competitions and activities. GEW 2011 saw over 500 students attend events and 400 entered our business idea competition, the Coffeemat Challenge.

Enterprising Spaces – At Lancaster we continue to develop an outstanding learning environment providing a variety of high quality and stimulating learning spaces and e-resources to support learning around the enterprise agenda. Interactive entrepreneurship simulations are available to all students. We support the incubation of our student enterprises through our centres of excellence, InfoLab21 and the Lancaster Environment Centre.

Entrepreneurship Support – At Lancaster University, enterprise and self employment opportunities are promoted as a real alternative to the traditional job market. In collaboration with our Students' Union we offer a ground breaking enterpreneurship support programme. Students have direct access to advice and guidance, signposting to external mentors and business angels, and support with all aspects of starting a company or social enterprise. This includes the opportunity to apply for a 'Proof of Concept' enterprise grant. Lancaster's student start-ups have won national and international awards, appeared on the BBC's Dragon's Den and have been celebrated throughout the national press.
