University of Sheffield

Enterprise at The University of Sheffield is having ideas and doing something about them. It is making ideas happen.

We are committed to our vision that every student at The University of Sheffield has the opportunity to engage with enterprise through their course and/or extra-curricular activities. We believe an enterprising curriculum helps students to become creative problem-solvers, apply their knowledge to real life situations and develop the skills they need to manage limited resources under uncertain conditions. This translates into a richer learning experience and an improvement in students' confidence and employability skills.

Within our dedicated enterprise department, the University of Sheffield Enterprise (USE), we have three Enterprise Learning Development Officers who support academics across all faculties and departments to identify whether their modules are already enterprising, embed enterprise in existing modules, and create entirely new modules that include an enterprise element.

We also have a standalone enterprise module called 'Making Ideas Happen.' This inter-disciplinary, multi-level course is designed to get students working collaboratively on real problems, and finding and presenting feasible solutions. The projects are always community based and have a social enterprise element. We are committed to developing and supporting social enterprise projects in particular, as part of the wider University Civic mission.

As well as our curricular enterprise provision, we also have a strong start-up support programme for students and recent graduates who wish to start their own business. Based at the Enterprise Zone, our support services include business coaching and advice from our in-house SFEDI accredited business advisor, seed-funding for market research and validation, and further funding for growth. In 2012, we opened our business incubation space and filled it within weeks.

We also run a series of regular and ad-hoc events throughout the year, including our annual Enterprising Ideas business planning competition, our Social Innovation Lab, and Skill Build workshops.

Our philosophy can be summarised by the following statement:

At The University of Sheffield, we believe that enterprise is about having ideas, doing something about them and taking advantage of opportunities to bring about change. It is about making things happen.
