Enterprise at the University of York
For over ten years the University of York has fostered entrepreneurship amongst its students and staff, hastening the transition of the old industrial economy of the city of York to one based on knowledge and enterprise. Working with the City Council the University formed the UK's first 'Science City' initiative, which has helped generate nearly 3,000 jobs and around 100 businesses.
We have embedded entrepreneurship throughout the student experience. Over 70% of academic departments now offer modules which present enterprise concepts within the framework of their discipline and all students can access accredited training in enterprise skills through the University's certificate of personal development, 'The York Award'.
Our Student Enterprise Centre provides outstanding meeting and presentation facilities and houses boundary-crossing research groups. It is now possible for students to learn about entrepreneurship in class, start their own business, meet real entrepreneurs going about their daily affairs and, on graduation, move into low price purpose built office space with on-site support and mentoring; all within the same building. The student led York Entrepreneurs Society is one of the largest organisations on campus and manages a wide range of inclusive competitions and challenges whilst practical support is also available to student start-ups.
