The University of Northampton has stated its intention to be the UK's leading university for social enterprise by 2015. Whilst the University recently won the UnLtd/Hefce award for 'Outstanding Higher Education Institution supporting Social Entrepreneurship 2011', its commitment is to enterprise and the promotion of entrepreneurship in a wider context and it has geared up its support offer for students, staff, and communities to help them start and grow the right business solutions to meet their needs.
The University has succeeded in integrating entrepreneurship into education and research within all its schools. This has required all course and research leaders to embed the development of enterprise competencies within all of their degree programmes and research projects to encourage students to think entrepreneurially and to promote entrepreneurship as a way of behaving. There are also opportunities for students to undertake accredited work placements, linked to taught programmes, for students who wish to experience such ways of working.
To support students to start their own business; extra workshops, business support, access to information, and business networking opportunities are provided through the University's Enterprise Club. The University and the Enterprise Club provides significant and integrated support to prepare students for graduate level jobs, either as employees or as entrepreneurs.
