Richard Beresford - a tribute

Dr Richard Beresford passed away suddenly on May 3rd 2016.

Richard was due to step into the role of Chair of Enterprise Educators UK this September and will be sorely missed.

The news of Richard's passing sent shockwaves through the enterprise community. The news genuinely moved all our EEUK Directors and Fellows, who, within an hour of the news breaking, had all rushed to say so many amazing things about Richard to which this piece could never do full justice. Here are just some examples:

I recall fondly a specific event. As Vice-Chair, Richard met me in London last year to give a presentation to the China-Britain Business Council. Richard’s passion, commitment and knowledge shone through during the meeting - a true Enterprise Educator. We also spoke afterwards about our children and it was evident that Richard was so very proud of his boys. He was always looking for opportunities, probing and challenging. I don't think he had an off switch in that ideas brain!” (Karen Bill, Chair Enterprise Educators UK)

"I recall a discussion in 2009 with Richard where he had, for a while, been connecting the dots of enterprise education and the value of FE and implications of insular assessments. We came to realise the problems associated with disconnected student assessment strategies, and the impact this was having on developments. His enthusiasm and drive helped me to move forward, and his insights cemented my understandings." (Prof Andy Penaluna, EEUK Fellow)

"He possessed a ready smile, boundless enthusiasm, dedication, commitment, a desire to do the right thing... and his wonderful humanity. His glass was always close to full – never close to just half full.“ (Dr Simon Brown, EEUK Fellow)

He was a highly creative individual, always challenging others with new (and sometimes wacky) ideas, but he also believed in enabling others to bring about change through creativity.” (Kate Beresford, Head of Membership and Operations, EEUK)

The EEUK Board meets in June and we will be considering an appropriate form of remembrance.
