EEUK Academic Pathway Network Event: AI versus original thought – who is the real inventor?

1:00 pm - 2:00 pm 03/03/2026

In this session, we will hear some alternative perspectives and best-practice guidance on ideation, protecting an original idea in a digital space, and understanding the value and limitations of AI for the scope of the concept. There will be time for discussion and hypothesising the ‘what if’s’.
Session speakers will cover:
  • The legal angles surrounding the use of and inclusion of AI-generated materials with Alexander Simpson, Patent Attorney from DefinitionIP
  • A more secure way to use AI in ideation will be demonstrated by Prof. Patrick Degenaar from the School of Engineering, along with a discussion of the potential uses and strategies for innovating with AI tools.

Who will benefit from this session?

  • Anyone advising students on ideation or wanting to understand the different AI tools and ideation security.
  • Anyone thinking about a novel concept and wants to understand legal definitions and protection further.
  • Colleagues considering including AI awareness in their teaching/advising.
