At Barnsley College, our vision is to provide exceptional opportunities and inspirational learning experiences for young people, adults, businesses and the community. One of our strategic aims is to be a beacon for enterprise and entrepreneurship and we have a range of programmes, projects and support available to staff and students to deliver this. We have a CiC – iTrust which is a joint venture with The Barnsley Chronicle and the Barnsley Business Village, to provide support, mentoring and grants to student start-ups. Now in its 6th year, iTrust has helped support the start-up of over 100 new businesses, which span across a range of sectors. The College itself, is enterprising in its approach to development and innovation of new ideas and we have a range of commercial enterprises in existence for example shops, a salon, cafés and an award winning restaurant, which are served by apprentices and students, providing a real work experience opportunity to students, aiding their employability. We were the first FE College in the UK to develop our own kick-starter platform to support students, and have won numerous awards including Educate the North – Innovation Award 2015 and a Duke of York Community Initiative Award. With the introduction of Industry Placements, which are part of the new T-Level qualifications, we continue to work closely with businesses, to broker new opportunities for students and increase their employability.
