Since 1898 ‘The University of East London’ has had a longstanding commitment to the local community as an ‘anchor institution’ which truly makes a difference to people’s lives. We take pride in offering a platform for our students to ‘learn by doing’ with a focus on education, employment, enterprise and civic engagement. Our commitment to serve our local east London community continues to strengthen as we grow our partnerships across the community leveraging opportunities with local employers, offering internship and placement opportunities for our students as well as working closely with numerous volunteer organizations where our students and staff have the opportunity to contribute directly as active citizens within Newham and the surrounding east London boroughs.
UEL Enterprise delivers a comprehensive range of initiatives to support students entrepreneurial pathways and ambitions. We aim to foster entrepreneurship across the institution offering everything from SME placements to funding and incubation. We support individuals to develop entrepreneurial skills, networks and ideas coupled with the knowledge for them to turn their ideas into income generating ventures.
Our Activities Include;
We aim to foster the development of enterprise skills, ambitions and ideas across the institution so offer a number of fun, engaging and collaborative activities across the year to inspire students who might not have considered enterprise. These include initiatives such as Enterprise Challenges, Hackathons, Industry Days and Inspirational Talks.
For those who already have an idea our Start Up series offers a broad workshops and collaborative activities delivered both inside and outside the curriculum. These sessions are designed for students and recent graduates who are exploring entrepreneurship and take them through the fundamental considerations when starting a business from market research to finance and we also can accredit participation through our institutional Professional Development Certificate.
In line with our institutional values we also extend some of our enterprise programmes to local residents and selected partners and are proud to support individuals from the local area develop and grow their businesses.
Our flagship ‘E Factor’ competition takes individuals from across the institution through a robust development programme which includes a 4 day experiential bootcamp and mentoring concluding with a live pitching final. The final five all receive financial support with the overall winner receiving £6000 seed funding and business incubation space. The competition has been embedded at UEL for over 10 Years and is a proven and innovative model which year on year produces award winning ventures.
Growth & Incubation
We run an annual growth funding round supporting our businesses to sustain and grow, as well as funding they receive a 3 month student intern, tailored mentoring and access to specialist support in areas such as HR, SEO, Investment etc.
We are fortunate to have our ‘Knowledge Dock Business Centre’ based at our Docklands Campus which is home to a mix of over 40 commercial and student led ventures and provides a thriving network and community for our businesses.
