At Newcastle University we aim to empower our students to be creative, innovative, enterprising and global in their outlook, and regard student knowledge exchange and entrepreneurship as important ways to enrich the economy, culture and society. With support from our core enterprise-centred graduate competency framework, our Careers Service advocates and advances the enterprising skill, ambition and achievement of all Newcastle University students and graduates through education, extra-curricular activity and our START UP offer.
Developing innovation, creativity and enterprise
Working alongside academics and colleagues within the Careers Service to engage over 2000 students each year, the enterprise skills of Newcastle University’s students can be developed for academic credit as part of their degree programme, our cross-faculty modules, or via co- and extra-curricular events.
Covering a vast array of subject areas to enhance entrepreneurial effectiveness across all faculties, schools and sectors, our Enterprise Advisers deliver Innovation Challenges, competitions and researcher training programmes like the Action for Impact initiative in partnership with the Northern Accelerator.
Business Start Up
START UP provides expert one-to-one guidance, training, resource and opportunity to those beginning a career as an independent professional or businesses founder. Included in the offer, START UP Founderships, is an intensive 6-month pre-accelerator programme for students and recent graduates demonstrating the potential to achieve scale and significance with an innovative, growth-orientated venture.
Many START UP clients have progressed to establish thriving businesses after raising considerable external investment and winning national and global awards. Notable clients include Buildstream, Castore, Equiwatt, Great North Research & Innovation Ltd, NOVELTEA, Nebula Labs and Spareable.
